CHICKEN GENETIC RESOURCES USED IN SMALLHOLDER PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT Smallholder Poultry Production

چکیده
5 Author Poul Sørensen has many years of experience with poultry research. His particular interest is in breeding and genetics. He has contributed to the development of Danish poultry breeding since the beginning of his career and over time came to be the leading person in this area. With the intensification of poultry breeding worldwide he shifted his attention to the consequences of narrowing the biodi-versity/variation among the poultry breeds available for production. His research in the later years has been directed towards the negative side effects of ongoing strong selection for higher egg production in laying stock, and higher growth rate in broiler chickens. Since 1995 Poul Sørensen has participated as specialist on short term missions to Bangladesh and several countries in Africa Since 1997 he is a member of the directory board of " Network for Smallholder Poultry Development " KVL, Copenha-gen, and has taught and supervised the 2 years MSc program " Poultry Production and Health " for 30 students from 11 developing countries. Livestock kept or produced in smallholder farming systems are an important component of the agricultural economy in the developing world. The role of livestock on smallholder farms varies widely, providing draught power for crop production or as a production activity for subsistence needs or market sale under systems ranging from extensive pastoralist to intensive, peri-urban feeder and dairy s...

A series of on-farm and on-station experiments on management and production of local chickens were conducted in Zimbabwe between 1998 and 2001. The overall aim of studies was to improve smallholder farmers’ livelihood and empower women through production of local scavenging chickens. Knowledge exists that poultry can be used as a tool for poverty alleviation and strengthening of women’s status....

In recent decades, significant international assistance has been provided to assist the establishment of market information systems (MISs) in a range of developing countries, including many in Africa. متن کاملThe National Animal Germplasm Program: challenges and opportunities for poultry genetic resources.
In the United States, poultry genetic resources have consolidated because of economic pressures. Such consolidations can potentially jeopardize the poultry industry and the ability of research communities to respond to future challenges. To address the loss of genetic resources for all livestock and aquatic species, USDA established the National Animal Germplasm Program (NAGP) in 1999. Since th...
